You do not need to know how to code before you start learning cybersecurity. Programming matters in many areas of the profession, but cybersecurity is broader than coding alone. Cybersecurity professionals investigate threats, manage risk and help organisations keep their systems and data secure.

If you're starting from scratch, don't worry about becoming a programmer overnight. Focus first on learning the building blocks of cybersecurity and develop your technical skills step by step. That distinction matters as organisations continue to need people with well-developed cybersecurity skills. UK Government research estimates that approximately 143,000 people were working in cybersecurity roles across the UK economy at the end of 2024. However, the sector still faced a workforce gap of around 3,800 professionals. At the same time, employers increasingly looked for candidates with relevant skills and experience. In 2024, only 17% of cybersecurity vacancies targeted people with less than one year of experience, while 63% required two to six years of experience. 

So, how do you start building cybersecurity skills? 

Do you need coding experience to work in cybersecurity? 

No. You can start studying cybersecurity without previous programming experience, although your need for coding will depend on the direction your career takes. 

Cybersecurity covers a wide range of work. A security engineer or software security specialist may spend considerably more time working with code than someone focused on cyber risk, governance or security analysis. Even in less code-intensive roles, however, understanding how computer systems work can help you identify vulnerabilities and communicate with technical teams. 

 People enter cybersecurity from many different backgrounds. UK Government research also found that 28% of recruits into the cyber sector had moved from non-cyber roles, while a further 15% entered as career starters, including graduates and apprentices. 

Instead of seeing coding as a barrier, think of it as one skill you'll build as you progress. 

What should you learn first about cybersecurity? 

If you have no coding or cybersecurity experience, trying to learn everything at once can make the field seem more complicated than it needs to be. A stronger approach is to build your knowledge in stages. 

  1. Computing and digital systems

Before you can protect a system, you need to understand how it works. 

Start with the fundamentals of computers, digital systems, and the relationship between hardware and software. It helps you understand why vulnerabilities happen and how security controls reduce risk. 

  1. Networks and operating systems

Networks allow devices and systems to communicate, which also makes them central to cybersecurity. 

Learning how networks, communications and operating systems work can help you understand how data moves, where vulnerabilities can occur, and how organisations secure connected systems. 

  1. Programming fundamentals

This is where coding starts to become useful. 

You do not need to arrive knowing several programming languages. Start by understanding fundamental programming concepts and how programmers approach problems.

Cybersecurity is a practical discipline. You'll need to apply what you've learned to real-world situations. 

Practical exercises can help you learn how to analyse unfamiliar situations, investigate problems, and apply security principles. This might include simulated cyberattacks and defence exercises, security analysis, secure software development, and project work.

Which cybersecurity careers require coding? 

How much coding you need depends on the role you choose.

Other roles combine technical knowledge with analysis and investigation. A security operations centre (SOC) analyst monitors systems and responds to potential incidents, while a digital forensics investigator examines digital evidence following cyber incidents.

These roles  show why coding is only one part of a cybersecurity career. The profession needs people who can understand systems, analyse information, solve problems, and communicate security issues as well as those who specialise deeply in programming. 

Why do practical cybersecurity skills matter? 

Technical capability remains an important issue for UK employers. 

The UK Government's Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2025 report found that 28% of cyber sector businesses said technical skills gaps among existing employees affected their ability to meet business goals. That figure increased to 46% when businesses were asked about job applicants lacking technical skills. 

The most commonly reported gaps included auditing and assurance, digital forensics, and cryptography and communications security. 

That's why employers look for more than strong programming skills alone. They need professionals who can apply technical knowledge to real security challenges. 

There is also considerable responsibility attached to this work. The UK Government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026 found that 43% of UK businesses identified a cyber breach or attack during the previous 12 months, equivalent to an estimated 612,000 businesses. 

Learning cybersecurity therefore means understanding not only how technology works, but how to protect the organisations and people who depend on it. 

Is cybersecurity a good career choice in the UK? 

Cybersecurity remains a large and important sector, but it's helpful to understand the realities of today's job market. 

The UK cybersecurity workforce grew by an estimated 5% to approximately 143,000 people in 2024. The median advertised salary for a core cybersecurity role was £55,000, compared with £48,900 across the wider IT labour market—a 12% premium. 

However, it has been reported that demand weakened during 2024 as part of a broader slowdown in digital recruitment. The number of core cybersecurity job postings fell by 33% compared with 2023, to 32,370 postings, or an average of 2,698 per month. Competition for entry-level roles also increased: only 17% of core cybersecurity vacancies sought candidates with less than one year of experience in 2024, down from 25% in 2022. 

For newcomers, this means building skills you can demonstrate in practice. Employers increasingly want evidence of what you can do. Formal study and practical projects can help you develop those skills.
