A common concern when studying online is the potential for isolation. At Aston Online, we believe that connection should be built into learning, which is why our programme modules include shared activities, collaborative spaces, personalised support, and a wider community that extends past graduation.

Every Aston Online learner has access to academic and pastoral support. Tutors provide personalised feedback and answer questions, while Student Success Advisors help you plan your workload and stay on track, so you’re never navigating your degree alone.
Our online programmes bring learners together through discussion forums, group discussions, interactive tasks, and collaborative work, with some programmes also offering live sessions to connect directly with tutors and classmates. Beyond your modules, you can join online study groups, subject-specific communities, and professional associations, plus career events and workshops with peers who share your goals.
And when you graduate, you stay connected through the Aston for Life platform, with access to sector-specific communities, expert-led content, mentoring networks, career tools and global job listings, and exclusive events and development opportunities.

When studying Computer Science or Cybersecurity with Aston Online, you will have the opportunity to join the Computer Science Industry Club.
What is Aston’s Computer Science Industry Club?
Aston’s Computer Science Industry Club is a structured engagement pathway designed to connect Computer Science and Cybersecurity students with employers and industry professionals through in-person events that help you network, showcase your skills, and understand what organisations look for when they hire.
Please note: Industry Club events are delivered in person in the UK. Online students can attend if they are in the UK at the time of the events.
Each year, the club runs a series of employability-focused activities. These can include:
- guest lectures
- individual and team project showcases
- professional mentoring
- visits to company offices
It’s designed to help you meet industry professionals, build your skills, and get a clearer line of sight from study to real roles.
For students who register as official members, the club also shares direct emails about placement and graduate roles from member companies.
Why this matters for online students
While online learning gives you flexibility, professional exposure can be a concern, especially when switching careers, returning to study after a gap, or trying to move into more senior work.
These types of industry engagement sessions can assist with building confidence by presenting showcases accompanied by professional mentoring. The club aims to future-proof your development through guest lectures and exposing you to this high-demand sector through company visits.
A systematic review on mentoring in higher education reports an overall positive verdict on mentoring’s career development potential, but notes that results and outcomes vary based on the level of participation and engagement from mentees.
Ultimately, this club exists to help you translate academic work into professional language by allowing you to practise how you present your thinking and build relationships that are hard to create alone.
A UK employer survey (CBI Economics / University Alliance summary) reports employers value enthusiasm, transferable skills, subject relevance, and vocational experience.
"Doing the project showcase gave me an insight into the sort of questions I’d be asked in interviews, what companies look for in potential candidates, and some of the innovations they were making at the time. This gave me more confidence later on when it came to applying for jobs and taught me a lot about networking. I also had the opportunity to meet a CEO at the event and after showcasing my project he offered me a summer internship. When I finished my degree, this led to an offer to re-join the company on their graduate scheme". Harman Uppal, Aston student.
The Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) highlights the important role of employer engagement, mentorships, and industry partnerships in bridging higher education and the workplace.
How the industry club supports different goals (computer science vs cybersecurity)
If you’re considering a Master of Science in Computer Science (MSc), you may be looking for a clear way to build confidence and career direction as you deepen your technical skills.
And if you’re looking at a Master of Science in Cybersecurity (MSc), you may be more focused on stability, impact, and long-term progression in a position that has meaning.
In both cases, the industry club activities support employability in a practical way:
- You practise explaining your work to professionals.
- You learn what employers value and where skill gaps appear.
- You build familiarity with professional conversations through mentoring and events.
Make the most of the industry club
The most useful approach is to treat industry engagement like a skill you build over time.
Here are practical ways to get value from club activities:
1) Register early so you don’t miss role alerts
Official members receive direct emails about placement and graduate roles from member companies. If you’re actively exploring your next step, those alerts matter.
2) Treat project showcases like interview practice
A showcase isn’t only about what you built. It’s about how you explain it. Prepare a short narrative around:
- what problem you solved
- why you made key decisions
- what you’d improve next time
That structure mirrors real interview conversations and helps you speak with clarity.
3) Build an employer-ready story
Employers hire for applied capability. Use each club touchpoint to practise answering:
- “What did you do?”
- “What impact did it have?”
- “What would you do differently now?”
4) Follow up like a professional
If you meet someone at an event, follow up within a day or two with a short message. Reference something specific you discussed. Keep it direct and grounded.
Whether you’re switching careers, or trying to move into more senior work, studying with Aston Online and joining our Computer Science Industry Club can support your growth and development goals.
